Bossypants – Tina Fey

Tina Fey’s biography… an interesting choice, you say. Well (I say) you’re not wrong there.

I thought I would be interesting, and delve into biographies. At the same time, I wanted to take a soft approach and not be bored out of my mind by some old guy’s memoirs.

Well, unfortunately I was a little disappointed here. I guess it’s my own fault. I never really connected with 30 Rock, as the humour is not quite my style. So – bad call, Steph.

To enjoy reading a biography, I think you need to have a genuine interest in the person. Also, if that person is a comedy writer, chances are you are not going to get much out of what you’re reading, except a few chuckles.

Did I take anything away from this? Not much. I appreciate Tina Fey’s candidness and how real she is. I like how she approaches body image, and being a female in a male dominated industry (fighting aginst the statement that ‘girls aren’t funny’). However, I don’t feel like much of it is going to stay with me.

It was interesting (and confusing) to experience so much sarcasm in writing. I almost feel like sarcasm doesn’t have a place in written form, because it’s really difficult to convey.

Don’t get me wrong – Tina Fey is entertaining, witty and clever. I got a few good laughs out of this.

Here’s an example of the style:

I feel about Photoshop the way some people about abortion. It is appalling and a tragic reflection on the moral decay of our society… unless I need it, in which case, everybody be cool.

All in all, in short, to sum up – sure. I read it. It was somewhat enjoyable.

I think next time I’ll read a more serious biography, of someone I’m actually really interested in. And that should be more enjoyable.

But, if you like cussing, the comedy scene, and people being straight up with you – you’ll probably love this.

(Sidenote: I’m a little bit terrified Tina Fey will read this and be offended and then write a mean response to me in another of her books. Heheheh as if. But nevertheless, I will just note that I think she’s an excellent human who has done great things.)

The end.
